Shadow Mountain Resort & Club
|Palm Desert, California
Secluded behind a high, resort-encompassing wall, the lush green grounds of this boutique-style retreat lie in a quiet, upscale neighborhood two blocks south of the desert's fountain-lined El Paseo shopping-and-dining district.
With panoramic views of the surrounding San Jacinto foothills, the resort's 19-court Tennis Complex features 16 hard and three clay courts, six lit for evening play. A team of USPTA-certified pros conducts weekly workshops for players of all ages and skill levels, as well as frequent social mixers and tournaments. From October through May, tennis director Michael McFarlane oversees the Desert Tennis Academy, which offers comprehensive daily singles and doubles clinics and video analysis. Tennis coordinator Karen Haase, a resort staple for more than two decades, arranges games among guests and local members.
Off the Court
A small but well-equipped fitness center features cardio and weight-training machines, five whirlpool spas, two saunas, a group-exercise room and massage facility. Other on-site recreation options include four swimming pools, volleyball, basketball, croquet, table-tennis, bicycle rentals, and the 18-hole Shadow Mountain Golf Course.
Accommodations and Dining
The resort's rooms, studios, and one-, two- and three-bedroom condos all feature contemporary furnishings, kitchens or kitchenettes, and balcony or patio boasting stunning San Jacinto Mountain views. For breakfast and lunch, the Tennis Complex's indoor-outdoor Courtside Cafe serves omelets, sandwiches, salads and fruit smoothies overlooking the courts and swimming pool. Although the resort does not have its own evening-dining destination, its Passport program offers guest discounts at several nearby restaurants.
Rates include double-occupancy accommodations with daily housekeeping services, complimentary parking, and use of all resort recreation facilities.
