Palmetto Dunes Resort
|Hilton Head, South Carolina
Overlooking the picturesque Shelter Cove Harbor, this 2,000-acre resort village is meant to evoke a sun-drenched, Mediterranean ambience. Miles of pristine beach and lazy lagoons are surrounded by palm-, maple-, pine-, and oak-lined woodland--as well as restaurants, a shopping plaza, and a deep-water marina.
The Palmetto Dunes' main Tennis Center comprises 17 hard and clay courts; nearby, a second facility features an additional eight clay courts lighted for late-night play. Rather than all-inclusive camps, tennis director John Kerr and his staff of six full-time pros conduct back-to-back, a la carte clinics and drills, each about 90 minutes long. Among intermediate and advanced options are the fast-paced Grand Slam clinic, Competitive Edge Doubles clinic, and Competitive Edge drill session. Beginning players can choose from less demanding 60-minute stroke-of-the-day, daily drill, and cardio-tennis sessions. The Tennis Center also offers 24-hour match-making, a daily social round robin.
Off the Court
In addition to tennis, recreation options at Palmetto Dunes revolve around the property's three golf courses, 28 swimming pools, marina, and three-mile beach. Activities include biking and hiking, canoeing and kayaking, and Gulf Stream boating and fishing. During the spring and summer months, the resort hosts nightly family entertainment such as live-music sing-a-longs and spectacular fireworks displays.
Accommdations and Dining
The resort's one- to four-bedroom villas, each with fully equipped kitchen and private patio, offer oceanfront, golf-course or Shelter Cove views. Of more than 20 on-site dining options, a highlight is Robert's Grille, which serves a bountiful, fairway-side buffet; there are also restaurants specializing in Italian and Mexican fare, steaks and seafood, and quick meals and snacks.
The resort offers seasonal junior tennis programs, as well as youth-oriented round robins and hip-hop cardio-tennis for teens.
