The Fairmont Orchid
|Kohala Coast, Big Island, Hawaii
Green sea turtles, secluded lagoons and Mauna Kea volcano views greet guests at the Fairmont Orchid, a 32-acre resort overlooking the Big Island's Kohala Coast.
On lush green grounds surrounded by barren black-lava fields, dramatic scenery is the backdrop for the resort's Tennis Pavilion, comprising 10 Plexipave hard courts, one of them a sunken stadium with bleachers and lights. Under the directorship of tennis pro Richard Stumpf, the resort's K-Swiss National Resort Tennis Academy offers programs for all player levels, from "Tennis First-Bounce" for adult beginners to "Courting for Life," a holistic-view session focusing on the mind, body and spirit of tennis rather than the game's technical proficiencies. Also offered are instructional theme clinics, lessons, racquet and ball-machine rentals, match-making services, and K-Swiss shoe demos.
Off the Court
Watersports are all the rage at the Orchid: Guests partake in Hawaiian-style activities from paddling outrigger canoes and snorkeling to splashing in the10,000-square-foot oceanfront swimming pool and lava whirlpools. A fitness center hosts 90-minute morning seaside yoga workouts, sunset beach volleyball games and water aerobics, among other classes, and an easy walking and biking trail winds through the property. In addition, guests can tee up at the on-site 36-hole Francis H. I`i Brown golf course, the south of which is built on a prehistoric Kaniku lava flow. In oceanfront cabanas, the resort's Spa Without Walls offers island-style restorative treatments such as Kona coffee-and-vanilla exfoliations, aloe vera body wraps, Thai massage and reflexology.
