Desert Springs, A JW Marriott Resort & Spa
| Palm Desert, CA
Surrounded by the majestic Santa Rosa Mountains, this massive resort is an oasis of recreation in the heart of the Palm Desert. With its network of sparkling manmade lakes -- over which small boats whisk guests to the property's fitness center, pools and restaurants -- at times, it can be difficult to remember that this is the desert.
The resort's Peter Burwash International-directed Tennis Center -- one of the few spots not accessible by boat--features 15 hard-surface courts, three clay courts and two stadium grass courts; it also has a SportsPC wall, a computerized hitting wall programmable to players of all levels. A comprehensive training program includes daily morning clinics, drill sessions, Grand Slam round robins, private lessons, game-matching, Quick Tips mini-clinics and Play the Pro challenges. And spectators arrive en masse for the resort's popular PBI Tennis Show, a Harlem Globetrotters-style pro-vs-pro match held Saturdays from December through April.
Off the Court
A 30,000-square-foot spa offers a full range of massage options, including Indian-inspired Ayurvedic and Kur ritual treatments; an adjacent fitness center features aerobic and cardio programs, as well as body-composition analysis, nutrition counseling, yoga and Pilates. There are also two 18-hole golf courses and an 18-hole putting course -- essentially, a very high-end version of miniature golf. A resort highlight is its central swimming island, three free-form pools surrounded by hot tubs and a laid-back calypso bar.
Accommodations and Dining
Desert Springs' 884 rooms and suites have Italian marble baths, private terraces and CD players, among other standard amenities. Eleven on-site eateries include a Starbucks and the Costas nightclub, which features live DJs, dancing and big-screen TVs. More formal dining options range from Northern Italian specialties at Ristorante Tuscany to South-of-the-Border fare at the Colibri Grille. At LakeView, American comfort food and sandwiches are served during the week; on Sundays, the restaurant offers a lavish buffet brunch.
No tennis-specific packages are available, but the resort does offer special Escape rates, which include accommodations, breakfasts and tennis discounts for two, among other perks.
