A Day in Wine Country sponsored by McWilliam's
The Hunter Valley about two hours north of Sydney is one of Australia's oldest and best known viticultural areas. The bucolic countryside and well-developed visitor infrastructure make it an ideal destination for a day or overnight trip, with top-notch restaurants, cozy accommodations and dozens of premium wineries open to the public for "cellar door" tasting and wine sales. Rent a car and drive yourself, or take advantage of the numerous tour and transportation services that specialize in wine country excursions from Sydney.

The region's challenging climate and soil conditions favor Shiraz and Semillon grapes, fine examples of which can be sampled at the following Hunter Valley wineries:
 McWilliam's Mount Pleasant Estate
McWilliam's Mount Pleasant Estate was established in the 1920s by Maurice O'Shea, a French-educated Australian winemaker who helped cement the Hunter Valley's reputation for premium wine production. Today Mount Pleasant produces a range of quality wines, including the critically acclaimed single-vineyard Lovedale Semillon and Rosehill Shiraz. In addition to a tasting room and gift shop (open daily), the property has a relaxed contemporary restaurant with seating indoors or in a garden courtyard.

 Lindemans
Lindemans, a leading Australian wine producer now owned by the Foster's beverage conglomerate, was established in the Hunter Valley more than 150 years ago and still produces a number of well-regarded wines from the region. The Lindemans Cellar Door at Ben Ean is open daily for tasting and wine sales.

 Tyrrell's Wines
Tyrrell's Wines, another historic Hunter Valley label, released its first vintages in the 1860s and now produces wines from several locations around Australia. Tours and tastings are offered daily except Sundays at the Tyrrell's Wines Cellar Door located on founder Edward Tyrrell's original 19th-century estate.

 Robin Drayton Wines
Robin Drayton Wines (formerly Reg Drayton Wines) is owned and operated by the region's first female vigneron, a member of a prominent local family that has been making Hunter Valley wines for five generations. The winery has a gift shop and tasting room (don't miss their luscious Chardonnay), a family history museum and a picnic area with lovely vineyard views.
