Paris
Paris is relatively small as capitals go, with distances between many of its major sights and museums easily walkable. In a span of just a few miles, the landmarks come thick and fast, and the river makes basic orientation easy, dividing the city into the Rive Droite (Right Bank) and Rive Gauche (Left Bank). In fact, the best way to get to know Paris is on foot, although public transportation -- particularly the Metro (subway system) -- is excellent. Arm yourself with the city map "Plan de Paris" (a handy booklet with a complete street-name and Metro index, easily found in bookstores and tabacs) and simply stroll to your heart's delight.

For the first-timer, there will always be several musts at the top of the list -- the Louvre, Notre-Dame, and the Eiffel Tower, among them -- but a visit to Paris will never be quite as simple as a quick look at a few landmarks. Every quartier, or neighborhood, has its own personality and unsuspected treasures, and you should be ready to explore. You can wander for hours without getting bored -- though not, perhaps, without getting lost.

Paris, a city of historical architecture, has very few hotels that make an unequivocally modern design statement. Hotel Square is one of them. The hotel is located in the 16th arrondissement, close to the Eiffel Tower, but also right in the midst of the media district, just opposite the Maison de la Radio, and is in fact something of a gathering place for radio and television professionals. The exterior is quite out of the ordinary, a low, roughly triangular building, faced in grey-green Indian granite with mirror windows.

The interiors are just as dramatically different from most Parisian hotel interiors. Open space is plentiful; sunlight pours into the lobby's atrium, and the central art gallery wall runs the height of the four-story hotel. Guest rooms, on the top two floors, are accessed by balconied walkways overlooking the gallery space, which is fully functional, featuring constantly changing six-week exhibitions by contemporary artists.
