 Transportation Tips
Although Miami -Dade County has two modern elevated light rail lines and an extensive network of city buses, most visitors will find it much more convenient to get around by car. Rentals are readily available at the airport and other locations, and despite the inevitable hassles with traffic, navigation and parking, a car will give you much greater freedom to enjoy the Miami area's widely dispersed neighborhoods and attractions. The only exception is if you expect to spend the majority of your visit at an all-inclusive resort or in a relatively compact area like South Beach. In some cases, taxi service can be a sensible alternative to driving, with zoned flat rates for airport transfers and metered rates around town.

 When to go
Heat, humidity and hurricanes are the primary factors that define the best and worst times to visit Miami. From November through May, pleasantly warm and sunny conditions prevail, and although the winter months can bring occasional cold snaps and periods of rain, this is peak season for South Florida tourism. Summer and early autumn bring hot, muggy weather accompanied by higher levels of rainfall and an increased possibility of hurricanes. Although direct hits by hurricanes are rare, hurricane warnings can be a major disruption, and the tropical depressions associated with hurricane season occasionally cause heavy rain and winds even in the absence of a full-blown hurricane. On the other hand, the summer and early autumn months are the best time to shop for travel bargains, with deep off-season discounts available at many Miami-area hotels and resorts.

In addition to the Sony Ericsson Open tennis tournament, major events around which you might wish to schedule your visit include the Orange Bowl (http://www.orangebowl.org) and the Miami Design Preservation League's Art Deco Weekend in January (http://www.mdpl.org); Carnaval Miami, a multifaceted springtime celebration of Latin American culture (http://www.carnavalmiami.com); the WGC-CA Championship golf tournament held in March at the Doral Golf Resort and Spa (http://www.worldgolfchampionships.com); Miami Fashion Week in May (http://www.miamifashionweek.com); the NASCAR Ford 400 in November (http://www.homesteadmiamispeedway.com); and Art Basel, an important international modern art show that takes place in December (http://www.artbaselmiamibeach.com).
