A different kind of Asian spa experience is available at the Japanese Bathhouse, an authentic ofuro-stylebathhouse a few minutes northeast of the central business district in Collingwood. As in Japan, the facility has separate communal bathing areas for men and women, with a tatami-mat lounge where beer, sake, green tea and light snacks are served. For an affordable alternative to commercial spas and massage clinics, pay a visit to the Australian College of Sports Therapy on Russell Street east of Melbourne Central Station. Student practitioners provide various styles of massage therapy for AU$25 an hour, with supervision by their instructors.
