Orange County/South Coast
Although out of L.A. proper - Laguna is more than an hour's drive, for instance - if you have the time, Orange County and points south are well worth the visit.

Two rooftop courts are available at this big suburban high-rise hotel, which caters to a mix of conventioneers and vacationers headed for Disneyland and other Orange County attractions. A bridge across the Pacific Coast Highway links the resort to miles of public beaches at the epicenter of Southern California's surfing scene. Rates average around $250 to $350 per night, with various package deals available.

 Hyatt Regency Newport Beach  

Guests at this handsome resort near the Newport Beach waterfront get access to the adjoining Palisades Tennis Club (, a professionally ranked private facility with 16 championship courts. Four outdoor courts and a full-time tennis pro are available at this pricey resort set on a bluff over the Pacific Ocean at Dana Point, about midway between Los Angeles and San Diego. The property features 393 exquisitely decorated guest rooms and a lovely spa, plus easy access to nearby golf courses and beaches. Rates range from around $400 a night to $800 or more for oceanfront rooms and suites, with a long list of package deals available.

 St. Regis Resort, Monarch Beach  
The tennis club at this ultra-luxurious Dana Point golf resort features six hard courts and two clay courts, with a tennis pro available for clinics and private lessons. Other facilities at the 200-acre property include an 18-hole seaside golf course, a high-end spa, three swimming pools, six restaurants, various meeting and event spaces and 400 upscale rooms and suites. Rates begin at around $400 a night and climb into four figures for the larger units with ocean views.
