Great Museums
J. Paul Getty Museum
If you only have time to visit one museum during your stay in the Los Angeles area, make it the superb J. Paul Getty Museum, home to an extraordinary collection of Western art dating from the Middle Ages to the present. The building itself is a dramatic feat of contemporary architecture set on a hillside in the Santa Monica Mountains, with expansive views over the Pacific Coast and an electric tram that carries visitors up from the parking area at the base of the hill. Aside from a $7 parking fee (cash only), there is no charge to visit the museum. The vast Los Angeles County Museum of Art on Wilshire Boulevard is another great cultural destination, housing diverse collections that span 8,000 years of human history. Adjacent to LACMA is the singular natural history exhibits in the Page Museum at the Rancho La Brea Tar Pits. Other top museums include the Norton Simon Museum of Art in Pasadena; the Huntington Library, also in Pasadena; the Bergamot Station Arts Center in Santa Monica; the three separate locations of the Museum of Contemporary Art.
