Santa Catalina Island
A day trip to Catalina is a great way to escape the L.A. smog and traffic, but if you can spare the time and money, plan to spend a night or two on this delightful island about an hour and a half by ferry from the mainland. In addition to the historic harbor village at Avalon, visitors can enjoy fantastic hikes and bike rides around the island, superb snorkeling and scuba diving, sport fishing and sea kayaking, golf and tennis, with lodging available in hotels, cabins and camp sites. Several ferry services carry passengers to the island from Long Beach, San Pedro, Marina del Rey, Newport Beach and Dana Point, or you can book a 15-minute helicopter ride from San Pedro or Long Beach.
