With one of the most spectacular backdrops of any ATP World Tour tournaments, the Allianz Suisse Open in Gstaad is situated in south-western Switzerland, near the border with France. Swiss hero Roger Federer was presented with a cow during a homecoming celebration in 2003 after winning his first Wimbledon title. Federer fell in the final that year to Jiri Novak but won the title in 2004.

Stosur and Dementieva enjoy first round byes in the 30-strong draw but there will be no such luxury for No.3 seed Agnieszka Radwanska, who has slipped just outside the Top 10 in recent weeks but is a threat on any surface. Right behind the Pole with the No.4 seeding is defending champion Marion Bartoli. The unorthodox Frenchwoman, who edged Venus Williams in last year's final, opens her defense against playing mom Ashley Harkleroad, who is making her first appearance since Miami.

The landmark Southern California ATP World Tour tournament is the longest running annual professional sporting event in Los Angeles, and offers total player compensation in excess of $1 million. Proceeds from the Farmers Classic, held in conjunction with UCLA, benefit the grassroots programs of the non-profit Southern California Tennis Association (SCTA) and UCLA.
