In her relatively short sports broadcasting career, Mieke has already covered the world's largest sports events on some of the most watched networks. From the Olympics, to World Cup Soccer and the Super Bowl, Mieke has tagged her mike with the logos of ESPN, SBS, Fox Sports Net and National Geographic & now Tennis Channel.
A native of Sydney, Australia, Mieke Buchan (me-ka) grew up as a curious and competitive tomboy. As a student, the only place she competed harder than she did in the classroom was out on the court and field. Mieke was relentless in her pursuit of victory in sports that ranged from the odd Commonwealth sport of netball to junior tournament tennis and full-contact Rugby.
But not even the ensuing broken bones and dislocated shoulders could deter Mieke from the adrenaline rush of fierce, top-level competition. It wasn‚t until Mieke discovered that she could have more impact with a microphone that she finally decided to hang up her cleats.
Having narrowly escaped a law degree, Mieke studied Comunications at UTS,
Sydney. While there, she competed in three Australian University National Games, and finished on the podium every time with her all-star netball
Upon authoring a handful of newspaper articles, Mieke was given a shot at
community radio with her own pop-culture talk show entitled "Chewin'
Canvas". Shortly after that Mieke scored her first TV gig. Never one to be
shy, she co-produced, wrote and hosted a pilot for Australian national
network, SBS. They bought the show and Mieke was asked to join the SBS
As a freelance TV journalist her voice grew bigger. While developing her
chops at SBS, Mieke began hosting morning drive radio, weekdays at
thebasement.com. Talking music all week and sports on weekends, Mieke
thought it couldn't get much better. Then in 1999 she got an even bigger
break, anchoring the weekend edition of World Sports on SBS.
Off the field, Mieke soon found herself chatting it up on popular Australian
talk shows like Beauty & the Beast. Soon viewers were introduced to a softer
side of Mieke. They watched as she developed her daytime prowess giving
intelligent & thoughtful advice on controversial issues.
Mieke's profile continued to grow when she signed on as the face of national
Aussie network FOX 8. There she hosted several programs during a variety of
time slots including the pop-culture game-show "Chain reaction", the travel
and lifestyle series "Postcards from Paradise" and the film/entertainment
interview and review show "Entertainment Extra." Sitting at the helm, she
enjoyed quality screen time with an all-star list of actors and directors
like Anthony Hopkins, Susan Sarandon, Paul Walker, Pierce Brosnan, Ashton
Kutcher, Matt Damon and Brett Rattner among others. For her National
Geographic series, Sports Sunday, Mieke interviewed a cross-section of
international sports stars.
But even with a concurrent presence on 5 channels, Mieke managed to take
part in a variety of charities and activities:- she worked as an ambassador
for the Breast Cancer foundation, strutted down the runway for the Humane
Society, became the face and voice for Sydney's Tourism Campaign, she drove
in the Celebrity race at the Australian Grand Prix, jumped out of a
perfectly good airplane and swam with the not-so-savage sharks of Belize
In 2003, Mieke received a coveted Logie nomination (Australian Emmy) in the
"most Popular Female" category. That same year, she graced the cover of FHM
magazine, & become one of FHM's 100 sexiest women.
After interviewing some of the world's greatest athletes, musicians and
filmmakers, Mieke now strives to top her greatest career moments that have
included getting a rare interview with Steffi Graf (for Tennis Channel),
being on the receiving end of a bear-hug from cinema great Anthony Hopkins,
and her on-field coverage of the last 4 Superbowls.
Mieke continues to add even more to her already busy broadcast schedule. In
addition to covering her favorite sport as the new face of Tennis
Channel, she appears weekly as a film reviewer and interviewer as the anchor
of "STC Previews" at the film-focused Sound Track Channel (now in 65
countries), and is an on-field corespondent for SBS Sports. You can also
catch Mieke guest-hosting the popular music video request show "V2R" at
Music Plus TV (the indi MTV), where she also co-hosts her own
tongue-in-cheek, relationship advice show, "Love Bites."
Mieke lives in Los Angeles.
