DISSECTING THE 2007 US OPEN DRAW - WOMEN

Can Maria Sharapova defend her title? No woman has done that since Venus Williams in 2001. So many tough names out there want to stop her - Serena, Henin, Kuznetsova, Meusburger - well, maybe not Meusberger. But there's still a lot of former champions in the draw that want there title back.

First Quarter
Justine Henin-HardenneJustine Henin and Serena Williams are in the same quarter. Again. The (arguably) two best players in the world have already met in the quarters of the last two Grand Slam events with Justine winning on the clay in France, and on the grass at Wimbledon. But now on hardcourt in front of her home fans, will Serena get the best of Justine? I don't think so. Serena at her best is better than anyone. But I'm not convinced she will bring it like she needs to bring it. Justine makes it through. By the way, there are other players in this quarter, but they are merely stars orbiting planets Justine and Serena.

Second Quarter
JelenaThis is a deep quarter - Jelena Jankovic, Venus Williams and Ana Ivanovic highlight a very tough group. Venus and Ana are on a collision course for the round of 16, where Ana can exact revenge for her Wimbledon beat down. But in the end, I like Jelena making it through. She's consistent, tough, and loves the spotlight.

Third Quarter

Lots of potential for a surprise making it through this quarter. Svetlana Kuznetsova and Nadia Petrova are the top seeds - both great players but not overwhelming. Other names to watch are Martina Hingis, Daniela Hantuchova and Katarina Srebotnik. I'm going to go with a surprise in this quarter in the name of Michaela Krajicek. She's come close to some big wins this year, and is ready for her break through.

Fourth Quarter
Chak dieselTwo tough Russians headline this group - Maria Sharapova and Anna Chakvetadze. Chakvetadze has come on strong during the hard court season, and Maria is the defending champ. So which one gets through? I think Chakvetadze is ready for a big run. Also, Maria has to get through Nicole Vaidisova, and that one really is too close to call.

Semis:
Henin vs. Jankovic Justine wins in three sets.
Krajicek vs. Chakvetadze Chakvetadze wins in straight sets.
Finals:
Henin vs. Chakvetadze
Justine Henin wins the title and proves why she is the top ranked player in the world.
