Hall of Famer to Sign Autographs, Mingle with Ad-Industry Participants

More than 100 are Entered to Play in April Doubles Tournament,
as Advertising Agencies Show Competitive Spirit

LOS ANGELES, April 14, 2005 – The Tennis Channel, a cable television network devoted to tennis and other racquet sports, today announced that groundbreaking tennis legend Billie Jean King will participate in the network’s second annual Spring Smashoff next week, an ad-agency tennis tournament designed to highlight the network’s programming and brand during upfronts. King will mingle with ad-industry contestants Tuesday, April 19, during the event’s opening night, signing autographs and offering occasional tennis pointers.

The network also announced that 64 doubles teams representing 13 agencies have registered for its annual doubles tournament. Filling entry slots on a first come, first served basis, half the teams signed up within three hours of the channel’s call for participants. The Tennis Channel again invited New York-area advertising agencies to participate in the Spring Smashoff, which this year takes place in New York April 19, 20 and 28. The tournament offers tennis fans and players who work in the advertising industry an opportunity to play against one another in a friendly, competitive atmosphere during television’s annual upfront season. Each night the network will offer food and drink alongside the competition.

First-night action takes place in a round-robin format, giving every team the opportunity to play every other team in its particular group, with eight groups overall. Each group winner earns a prize, and the top two finishers from each group advance to the “sweet 16,” single-elimination tournament the following night, which whittles the field down to the final four. These semifinalists return the following week, for the semifinals and championship April 28.

Each group is named after a tennis star: Agassi, Roddick, Venus, Serena, Sharapova, Davenport, Federer, Hewitt.

Last year’s inaugural tournament was won by Mediaedge’s Kinsley Howe and Martin Dehler, who are defending their title this year. The 2005 tournament winners will receive the same Spring Smashoff trophy that has been in Mediaedge’s possession for the past year, and will have their names engraved on it as the contest’s second champions. As with hockey’s famous Stanley Cup, the trophy will be passed annually to each new Spring Smashoff winner.
